Great Sacandaga Lake August Update – August 14, 2026

Our Great Sacandaga Lake August update brings another week of relatively steady conditions on the Great Sacandaga Lake. On August 7, the lake was sitting at 763.90 feet, and today, August 14, the level is 763.16 feet. That’s a drop of about 9 inches over the past week, but conditions on the lake have remained excellent for enjoying the final weeks of summer.

Sacandaga Lake August Update: Water Temperature & Recreation

The current water temperature is approximately 64 degrees, according to LakeMonster. Their outlook is also showing favorable conditions this weekend for many water activities.

Boating has been excellent this past week. We’ve experienced mostly a small chop with little to no major wind, making for some great days to get out and enjoy the lake.

As always, keep an eye on water depth as lake levels gradually decline later in the season. Areas you traveled through earlier in the summer may be shallower now.

Bonfires light the shoreline during the annual Great Sacandaga Lake Ring of Fire, an end-of-summer tradition around the lake.

Ring of Fire Preparations Are Beginning

If you’re boating around the lake over the next couple of weeks, you may start noticing some very large piles of wood and brush along the shoreline. Some are built almost like giant teepees.

That’s a sure sign that Ring of Fire season is approaching.

The annual Great Sacandaga Lake Ring of Fire will take place on Sunday, September 6, 2026. At dusk, bonfires are lit around the shoreline, creating a ring of fire around the lake. The tradition was first introduced here in 1988 and has grown into an unofficial end-of-summer tradition.

Next week, I’ll take a deeper look at the history of the Great Sacandaga Lake Ring of Fire—how it started, who helped bring the idea here, and how it became one of our lake’s most recognizable traditions.

Until then, enjoy the lake, boat safely, and make the most of these remaining summer weekends!
